Rulers, calipers, and tolerances — study worksheet

Name: ____________________ Date: ______________

This printable organizer accompanies the hub lesson. It is a guided study sheet, not a scored test or an official ASVAB question set.

1. Read the core idea

Read the marked scale and determine the smallest division before reporting a measurement. Start from zero or subtract the starting mark when zero is not used. Calipers can measure outside, inside, or depth dimensions depending on the jaws and depth rod. A tolerance is an allowed range of variation, so a measurement should be judged against both the target and that range.

2. Trace the worked example

If an object begins at 2 inches and ends at 7.5 inches on a ruler, its length is 5.5 inches.

Write the steps or relationships that explain the result:

3. Use the method

Name the unit, count the divisions, and identify which surfaces the tool measures.

Summarize the method in your own words, with a diagram or labeled units where useful:

4. Record a mistake to avoid

The ending scale reading is not the length when the starting point is not zero.

Describe how you will recognize and correct this mistake:

5. Review after practice

Use the mixed practice check linked in the hub. Record the skill you need to revisit and your next study step.
