Main idea versus supporting detail — study worksheet

Name: ____________________ Date: ______________

This printable organizer accompanies the hub lesson. It is a guided study sheet, not a scored test or an official ASVAB question set.

1. Read the core idea

A main idea accounts for the passage as a whole. A supporting detail explains, illustrates, or qualifies that idea. Summarize each sentence briefly, then look for the relationship shared by those summaries. A good main-idea answer should cover the important points without being broader than the passage. Do not assume the first sentence always states the main idea.

2. Trace the worked example

A paragraph describing tree shade, cooler pavement, and reduced building heat supports the main idea that urban trees can reduce heat.

Write the steps or relationships that explain the result:

3. Use the method

Write a one-sentence summary, then check that every major detail fits under it.

Summarize the method in your own words, with a diagram or labeled units where useful:

4. Record a mistake to avoid

An answer about one example may be true but too narrow for the whole passage.

Describe how you will recognize and correct this mistake:

5. Review after practice

Use the mixed practice check linked in the hub. Record the skill you need to revisit and your next study step.
