Levers and turning effects — study worksheet

Name: ____________________ Date: ______________

This printable organizer accompanies the hub lesson. It is a guided study sheet, not a scored test or an official ASVAB question set.

1. Read the core idea

Turning effect depends on force and the perpendicular distance from its line of action to the pivot. A longer effort arm can reduce the force needed to balance a fixed load. For a simple horizontal lever with perpendicular forces, compare force × arm length on each side. An ideal machine trades force for distance; it does not create extra energy.

2. Trace the worked example

A 40 N load at 0.5 m produces 20 N·m. A 10 N effort at 2 m can balance it on the opposite side.

Write the steps or relationships that explain the result:

3. Use the method

Locate the pivot, mark each arm, and compare the turning effects.

Summarize the method in your own words, with a diagram or labeled units where useful:

4. Record a mistake to avoid

Measure the arm from the pivot, not from one end of the lever to the other.

Describe how you will recognize and correct this mistake:

5. Review after practice

Use the mixed practice check linked in the hub. Record the skill you need to revisit and your next study step.
