Goods, Services, Producers, and Consumers

How do people make, provide, and use goods and services?

Learning goal

What you will be able to do

tell a good from a service; identify a producer or provider and a consumer or user; trace a simple good or service from work to use

Before you begin

Activate what you know

Look at a loaf of bread and a picture of a bus ride. Which one is an item you can hold, and which one is work someone provides?

Words to know
1

Goods Are Items; Services Are Work

A good is a physical item people use to meet a need or want. Apples, pencils, tables, and coats are goods. A service is work done for someone, such as teaching, repairing a pipe, delivering mail, or providing a bus ride. Some examples include both. At a restaurant, the meal is a good, while taking an order and preparing or serving the meal are services. At a clinic, medicine may be a good, while the examination and health guidance are services

Teaching visual 1 for Goods, Services, Producers, and Consumers
Read the visual. Goods and services often work together. The item and the work are connected but are not the same thing
2

People Can Hold More Than One Economic Role

A producer makes a good or provides a service. Someone who performs a service is often called a service provider. A consumer obtains and uses goods or services. The word consumer does not mean wasteful; it simply names a role in an exchange or use. One person can be a producer in one situation and a consumer in another. A baker produces bread and may consume a bus service to travel. Some goods and services are bought in markets, while others are provided by households, governments, nonprofits, or volunteers

Teaching visual 2 for Goods, Services, Producers, and Consumers
Read the visual. Many producers of goods and providers of services may contribute before a consumer uses one good. Work is connected across places
Key point

Ask Item or Action

If it is a physical item people use, it is a good. If it is work performed to meet a need or want, it is a service. Some situations include both

Study strategy

Use Verbs to Find Services

Ask what work is being done: teaching, repairing, transporting, caring, or organizing. Then ask whether a physical item is also involved

Common misconception

Not Every Service Comes in a Store

Public libraries, household caregiving, government services, and volunteer work are services even when the user does not pay at the moment of use

Try it

Trace a Pencil

Look at a pencil. Imagine the people who prepare wood and graphite, make the pencil, transport it, place it in a shop or school, and use it. Name at least one good, producer, service, and consumer in the chain

TOPIC SUMMARY

Goods are physical items, and services are useful work. Producers make goods or provide services, and consumers obtain and use them. One person can have several roles
