What you will be able to do
use a simple map scale; locate a feature in a grid cell; distinguish latitude from longitude
How do scale, grids, latitude, and longitude help locate places?
use a simple map scale; locate a feature in a grid cell; distinguish latitude from longitude
On a letter-number grid, explain how cell B3 differs from cell C3
A map scale tells how a measurement on paper relates to real distance. If one centimeter equals one kilometer, a straight two-centimeter segment represents two kilometers. Curved routes should be followed along the curve rather than measured only end to end. A grid gives locations labels. Always read coordinates in the order the map specifies. Letter-number grids often name the column first and row second, but other coordinate systems have their own rules

Latitude lines run east-west around the globe, but they measure how far north or south a location is. The Equator is 0° latitude. Longitude lines run from pole to pole and measure east or west from the Prime Meridian at 0° longitude. Coordinates are written as latitude, then longitude. At Grade 3, the goal is to recognize the system and locate broad positions, not calculate precise navigation. Globes often show the system with less shape distortion than flat world maps. A location at 30° north and 90° west lies north of the Equator and west of the Prime Meridian. The coordinate identifies position; it does not describe climate, culture, or political borders

Read the title, legend, grid labels, and scale before measuring. Do not assume every map uses the same coordinate order or units
Latitude lines look like rungs of a ladder around a globe; longitude lines are long from pole to pole. Then emphasize what each measures
Latitude lines look horizontal but measure north-south position. Longitude lines look vertical on many maps but measure east-west position
Use a teacher-provided grid map. Find three cells, measure one route using its scale, and identify whether two sample global coordinates are north or south of the Equator
Scale connects map distance to real distance, grids identify sections, and latitude-longitude coordinates locate positions on Earth

6 kilometers
C2
Measuring straight across would shorten the route and underestimate distance
North or south of the Equator
East or west of the Prime Meridian
0 degrees
Latitude
A grid cell names an area; a coordinate can identify a more exact position
Units determine whether the answer represents feet, miles, kilometers, or another distance
South of the Equator
