CLEP Spanish with Writing Practice Test 1
The official CLEP Spanish with Writing exam (Levels 1 and 2 combined into a single score) is delivered in three separately timed sections totaling about 110 minutes: Section I, Listening (30% of the composite score), built from audio played once or twice, with Rejoinders (10%) testing the most natural next line in a short exchange and Dialogues and Narratives (20%) testing longer spoken selections; Section II, Reading (45%), with Discrete Sentences testing vocabulary and grammatical structure (13%), Cloze Passages (15%), and Reading Comprehension of authentic texts (17%), every multiple-choice item offering four answer choices (A--D); and Section III, Writing (25%), two human-scored production tasks --- an interpersonal email (about 10 minutes, minimum 60 words, informal register) and a presentational composition (about 20 minutes, minimum 100 words, organized and consistent register) --- each graded 0--4 by multiple college Spanish faculty readers, with official scores released one to two weeks after the test date rather than immediately, unlike most other CLEP exams. Because this is a printed book, it cannot reproduce the exam's audio-based Listening section, and a static answer key cannot grade original prose the way trained human readers do, so it cannot reproduce the human-scored Writing section either. Those two components are covered conceptually in this book's companion Quick Review, and five unscored practice writing prompts, modeled on the real Task 1 and Task 2 formats, appear in an appendix after the answer key --- but neither is retested here as static, machine-scorable print items. This practice test instead offers a full-length, proportionally weighted set of 60 original multiple-choice items covering the printable Reading section in full: Part A, 16 discrete-sentence items (8 testing vocabulary in context, 8 testing grammatical structure); Part B, 2 cloze passages (16 items total, 8 numbered blanks each); and Part C, 7 reading passages and authentic documents (28 items total) --- a restaurant dialogue, a personal email from a study-abroad student, a community festival poster, a newspaper article on a city recycling program, an online forum discussion about remote work, a short literary narrative, and a bilingual job advertisement --- spanning beginner (Level 1) through advanced (Level 2) difficulty. Every passage is written entirely in original Spanish; read each one fully before answering its questions. Give yourself about 45 minutes for all 60 items, then check your answers against the key and read every explanation, even for items you answered correctly. This is an independently written practice test created for this book and is not an official College Board CLEP Spanish with Writing exam form.
