AP Music Theory Practice Test 1

This practice test contains 54 multiple-choice questions covering the music-theory analysis skills tested on the nonaural (score-reading) portion of the AP Music Theory Exam: pitch and clef reading, scales and key signatures, intervals, triads and seventh chords, figured bass, Roman numeral analysis, cadences and phrase structure, SATB voice-leading, nonchord tones, secondary function, modes, and musical form. Musical examples in this companion set are described in text/chord-symbol notation rather than rendered staff notation, since the official exam's printed scores and all recorded/aural excerpts (used for the dictation, error-detection, and sight-singing components) cannot be reproduced here. This set therefore does not cover the aural multiple-choice items, the written free-response dictation and part-writing questions, or the sight-singing component --- consult the official College Board course and exam description for those portions. Each question has one best answer chosen from four options (A--D); there is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question. This is an independently written practice test created for study purposes and is not an official College Board form; it is not endorsed by or affiliated with the College Board or the AP Music Theory Program.
