AP Latin Practice Test 1

The AP Latin Exam, Section I (Multiple Choice), contains 52 questions in 65 minutes and counts for 50% of the total AP score; Section II then adds four free-response translation and analysis questions. This companion set gives original multiple-choice practice modeled on the reading-comprehension, translation, grammatical-identification, scansion, and literary-analysis skills tested on the actual exam; it is not a substitute for reading the required authors in full. It contains 52 original multiple-choice questions built around 8 original Latin passages: three passages of Vergilian-style, dactylic-hexameter-adjacent epic verse (echoing the required Aeneid readings), three passages of Caesarian-style historical prose (useful sight-reading practice in a register long central to AP Latin), and two passages of Pliny-the-Younger-style epistolary prose (reflecting the current College Board syllabus, which as of the 2025--2026 revision pairs Vergil with Pliny's Epistulae). Every passage is entirely original Latin --- no line is reproduced from any real ancient author --- and every explanation includes an English translation or gloss so the test remains usable even while you are still building vocabulary. For each question, read the passage first, then select the single best answer from the four choices given. Give yourself about 65 minutes to work through all 52 items, then check your answers against the key and read every explanation, even for items you answered correctly. This is an independently written practice test created for this book and is not an official College Board AP Latin exam form.
